But that's not really a problem if the root account is disabled, right? As far as I know, you'd also need to be running an SSH server that allows root access for that to be possible.

Nah...and Windows viruses don't usually affect Linux anyway. If you really want to protect your drive, you could always encrypt it using Truecrypt or similar.
