The phy was not but the firmware-b43-installer was available. Anyway, the nonfree firmware didn't work either. All same. Networks listed in the applet, selected, icon animation, connection is not...
Just started clean with 14.04. Issued
sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer
and restarted.

This made the network work after reboot. Wifi connected. After a second reboot it stopped working. I re-aplied post #32 rebooted and it started working again. Another reboot, not working again....

BIOS is updated, at defaults and in the same state as before when wifi started working.
I don't recall fiddling with modules.
