Not always an option - especially on older computers.
Sounds like the .iso got copied to the disk instead of installed on it. What shows on the disk if you view it from another computer?
Now, would someone like to offer some helpful advice - even if it's "upgrade and use your backup"?

There are zealots on both (all 3?) sides of the fence. I'm no psychologist, so I can't say whether or not it makes them feel superior to berate someone else, or their OS.

You've tried sudo or sudo -i?

Try removing one of the gateways (gw 192.168.1.5).
For a mixed environment (Linux and Windows), you'll probably be using Samba.
