An answer to your original question - if you install lubuntu along side of ubuntu and use grub to chose the system that runs, you should not notice a slowdown.

The is a program called 'Wine' which allows windows programs such as the one you mention to run on linux. You should still be able to use your program.
I have the same problem, (chipmunks on speed audio). I was hoping someone would have found an answer to this problem by now. Going back to 11.04 doesn't sound like solving the problem to me.

Try df -H and see what it says.
Open a terminal type "sudo vmware" and make sure there are no errors. VMware should start.
if it works, make a launcher "gksudo vmware" as the command line.
