I think ath9k_htc doesn' t work in Ubuntu 8.04, because uses old kernel!
A test you can do, is to install newer kernel! I try it to virtualbox and i had no problems!
First you must...
Reboot and select to continued with older kernel, e.g.
Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.35-14-generic
older than 2.6.35-23-generic
and see if it works your usb wireless again!

sudo gedit /etc/modulesremove one line with ath9k_htc
save it and exit
Then, remove ath9k_htc-installer from synaptic
download .deb package for Ubuntu...
