Not exactly a "prompt answer", but I've just installed KDE4 and giving it a try.
Linking .kde4 to .kde seems to work out the fonts issue here (Debian Lenny). Dunno if it could cause any other issue...

It worked (breezy C4 on AMD64). Everything went fine, but I had to (discover ](*,) and) remove /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.a which prevented glx extension to properly...

use the -k option to keep files and the manually launch: mkcramfs /<tmp_data_dir> /boot/initrd_image

that's what mkinitrd was supposed to do...
