I don't know about the biggest, but Ubuntu definitely doesn't have the most up to date software repo's.
Tried it and the video played full-screen for me. Perhaps it's an Ubuntu specific problem, maybe a bug in the MPlayer from the repositories.
It has never done that to me.
MPlayer is pretty fantastic, though I really don't like Gmplayer at all.
