Have you tried the following command?
ubuntu-bug audio
I recommend installing from the ubuntu repositories as follows:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
Then reboot, unless you need the subject driver for a particular reason...?
In System Settings -> Sound -> Output tab, what is selected in "Play sound through"?
It might be beneficial if you posted the outputs of lsmod & lspci.
