I had this problem (initramfs/ash no error message) on a Pentium 3 and solved it by helping the bios see my IDE hard drive.... I think you all should enter this as a bug on...

workaround:
so apparently the -r and -w options work but do not effect the displayed permissions
ls -al will say -rwxrwxrwx when in fact it could be -r--------

objective : mount the same share to 2 folders with different permissions.
