    [ubuntu] Re: Failed backups

This a bug in Duplicity. Be sure to enable "proposed updates" in the software sources settings and the next update should include a fix.

    See...
  2. Re: copy files. launch default text editor. run command in terminal

In fact it is not very difficult to make this work on at least the major desktops.

    http://portland.freedesktop.org/wiki/

Look at xdg-open which is a small shellscript doing what you want in...

I suggest you try these commands as well. ;)

    man tar
  4. Re: Mac-style Menu Bar for GTK and Java/Swing applications!

Firefox is, despite what you would think, not an actual gtk application but instead something that tries to imitate gtk (with xul). Consequently the menubar won't be able to hijack its menubar...

    Re: Xmms Skins for ubuntu

These three skins look plain ugly - in my opinion.
  7. Re: Mac-style Menu Bar for GTK and Java/Swing applications!

While I like the central menubar I don't see how a central toolbar would work. For one, a window can have multiple toolbars. Further more, toolbars are often user editable. How would you handle this?...
  8. Re: Mac-style Menu Bar for GTK and Java/Swing applications!

Actually Firefox is not a genuine gtk+2 application. Since the menubar is like everything else some kind of website (xul is the keyword here) it can not be detected by the patch.
  9. Re: Mac-style Menu Bar for GTK and Java/Swing applications!

I'm glad to see that the strange shortening of names doesn't happen only to me. To "fix" this I tried to replace some program names. However the problem seems to lie somewhere else.

    Are there any...

Re: Script to easily block websites

Personally I find it better to add lines to the hosts file manually. If I were to script every single task like this I'd easily end up with thousands of them. If you need it os often it may be a...
  11. Re: using emerge in ubuntu and compiling source

There is a package called 'build-essentials' and you can either install from the repositories or from generic tarballs. There are also packages to compile a custom kernel from sources. Do a little...
  12. Re: Dell Computers and Linux

So what? Basically this is what customers have said years ago already. However it is pleasant to imagine Dell make it actually happen. :)

    Re: gNewSense

So does gNewSense work for you? I guess a system with not a single proprietary thing on it should be hard to use. For example won't you hear any music which may be mp3 encoded? And I'm not letting...

Poll: Re: What is your favorite editor?

I'm using Scite for coding. It has the usual features but on top of that syntax highlighting is better in some cases, e.g. php, css, javascript&html can be mixed without any problems. It is a...
  15. Poll: Re: Best Language for Commercial Grade GUI's

If you want to be productive choose Python - although this has nothing to do with GUI at all. If you'd asked what GUI I had said Gtk because it's really comfortable to code for and use as well.

Poll: Re: The Linux Desktop Readiness Thread

Linux is ready for the desktop if at least half of the hardware manufacturers fully support it and a preinstalled computer is usable for most people.

In my opinion it doesn't have anything to do...

Poll: Re: Xubuntu, default Email Client

I like Claws Mail as it feels like two times as fast as Thunderbird. However, there are two important drawbacks I'd ask to be overcome before it is used as the default client:

  18. Re: I'm programming on Windows, I want to program for Ubuntu on Ubuntu

I recommend Python - not only for beginners. It's easy and uncomplicated, also very portable.
If you want to use it for Windows choose either pyGtk or wxWidgets, since qt is commercial on Win32.

  20. Re: The best way to program for KDE and GNOME at the same time, so the app works on b

Personally I have the impression that wxWidget apps are only partly looking like e.g. Gtk+2 apps, for example I believe there is no icon theme support. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Poll: Re: Gnome - KDE - Xfce

I prefer XFCE over Gnome because it is light and I know what I have. It doesn't have large amounts of libraries which tend to slow down the system even if you don't really need them.

    Prefiero XFCE...
  25. Re: How to: Xubuntu - Thunar Native Windows Network Browsing
