For starters, boot via a live-CD and post output of

    gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

[ubuntu] Re: PDF Readers... What do you use?

I use KDE4 and hence okular which is a swiss-army knife sort of application for reading multiple document formats. It reads PDF documents very well (uses the same poppler backend as Evince).
  17. [ubuntu] Re: Trying to exit X server to install nvidia drivers

I am not sure what instructions you are following for installing Nvidia drivers.
See if these instructions work for you.
  18. [ubuntu] Re: Trying to exit X server to install nvidia drivers

No need to change the default runlevel. From a terminal execute

    sudo init 1
That should give you a single user text terminal without any GUI.

    [ubuntu] Re: Input Not Supported...?

Probably the "HorizSync" and "VertRefresh" values are off. They should be present in the 'Section "Monitor"' of your xorg.conf file.

Check your monitor manual for the supported values.

[ubuntu] Re: Update error... Network problem?

Seems that the installation CD has been added as a repository for apt-get and the CD is not present in the optical drive.
Disable the CDROM repository and see if that error goes away.
  24. [ubuntu] Re: Torrent download vs directly from site? do you get the exact same file?

Yes, they should be the same and as you said, using checksum is the only sure way to confirm that.

[ubuntu] Re: Can't hear other audio when using Skype

My guess is that a configuration change in Skype is required.

Look for Skype configuration steps in the section "Appendix C: Application Compatibility Guide" of this thread and see if that helps.
