As for mounting windows shares on Kubuntu/Ubuntu, that's another problem than the one covered in this thread. However, I've used these guides...
I had problems with that earlier, but that was back on Dapper. I'll try later, but I don't have time today.
I'm sharing a subdirectory to my home directory, and should have full permissions for both group, root and user there.
Sure, but it's also causing problems in lots of situations, so it should at least be mentioned as a possible fix.
Try removing the line
force group = jamie
Someone who has the power to edit the origanl post to add this? A lot of people are having this problem.
Try what I suggested a few posts ago:
Remove the line
force group = user1
I don't know why it's not working with that line, but removing it helps for me.
Yep, that's the one. Remove or comment out, according to taste.
This thread is getting long and contains a lot of historical stuff. Perhaps it's time to gather the current bits and start a new one?
Skrimpy and Linuxnovice, try removing or commenting out the line "force group = something". It helped for me.
OK, at last I found my problem!
I had specified both group and user in smb.conf, which worked nicely in Gutsy and earlier. When I removed group, it worked perfectly again. Yay!
Now, I only have...

I don't think so, I don't use firewalls on the machines which are safely inside my own network.
How do I check if Hardy added one without telling me?
Another guy here that got his Smaba killed by the Hardy upgrade. Killed it on all machines that had samba shared (10 machines, give or take), so it's not an isolated problem. All machines were set up...
Yes and yes.
Are you sure you got the workgroup right? That caused me some problems much like yours when I hurried a bit too much on one machine.
Otherwise, check caps lock. :)
Another small problem I've noticed:
I'm sharing files with international characters, in my case the Swedish Å, Ä and Ö. Windows and Linux apparently has different ideas about how to represent...
Worked nicely for me, except for the startup issue I mentioned, but that was only on a few machines, the rest worked perfectly.
Nope, it's note even installed.
Wonderful guide, worked like a charm on six different machines running Kubuntu Gutsy.
On three of the machines, though, there is a slight hitch. Whenever I reboot the machine, the samba service...
