Did a netinstall of Toutatis and then install xfce on a system76 pan7 laptop and I´m very pleased with the outcome. The only downside is the laptop itself, because my System76 laptop is not freedom...
A classic example of what happen when one´s depend on proprietary drivers. :( My next laptop will have Intel graphics to avoid the need for this evil drivers. For now I´m lock to use 12.04.
Perhaps you should try Xubuntu. It has a nice the level of customization, it belong to the Ubuntu family, but you may have more control and wont have to deal with some of the issues you mention...
