sudo apt-get install -f
You can copy/paste to terminal

Try another jack on mobo maybe pin configurations are messed up.

Good it makes things easier, open the file again using this
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
scroll to end of file and enter this line:
options snd-hda-intel model=auto ...
No, I don't use xubuntu and the info i'm reading some areusing alsa and some oss so Idon't want you to install something that may screww thing up more.

I just played some music from "tunein"
not all stations worked, most did, using vlc player
not sure what you should do
can try purging vlc and reinstalling

to model=auto
In alsamixer you have to use the arrows on the keyboard to navigate.
To change sound card press F6 use up/down arrows to select card
When you have selected card press enter
