I already had many problems to install my 8400 GS NVIDIA GEFORCE on UBUNTU and I find many solutions to do it all the times...
For now, I has discovered on a Brazilian forum a little...
Many peaples are having problems to install Nvidia drivers on Ubuntu.
Then, I decide to put here the step bye step I get my GEforce 8400 GS runing under Ubunt 10.04.
1st- Download the latest driver...
I has noticed the Ubuntu 10.10 have a issue with Nvidia drivers and I think to reinstall it is not the solution...
Just install the Nvidia recommended driver for your VGA card.
I use the GEforce...

You could remove all installed drivers and blacklist noveau driver. Then, You can reinstall the latest driver from nvidia site.
To do it,press Ctrl+Alt+F1.
$ sudo service gdm stop

type these commands on a terminal:
sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
sudo reboot
sudo nvidia-xconfig
sudo reboot

I have the same problem but I cant get a solution to this issue...
I already has tryed all the tips I found on the forums but no success...
I use the Gforce 8400GS card with the latest...
