First Question-This is Normal, Grub shows memtest, which tests your system in a linux terminal.

Or maybe Ubuntu thinks it isn't.
Maybe Ubuntu just doesn't like it. My Laptop doesn't allow me to enable it either.
Your Motherboard may not support it.
Go ask Acer.
Try using a online calculator or a different application. There should be another program you can use.
When the Computer sleeps, it may not give power to the external drive, and it forces it to wake back up to give power back to drive.

Use System -> Administration -> Disk Utility and Find your MP4 and format it that way. Use FAT drive format and give it a label. Your MP4 will now work with Windows computer too.
Try contacting the company and ask them why it isn't working.
Or plug in a external keyboard, that may work.
Try System -> Prefences -> Mouse -> Touchpad -> Set Edge Scrolling and Vertical Scrolling and Click Close.:p
