    Also looking to figure out how this works, any ideas? I have it enabled in rhythmbox, but it never updates my status in empathy. I am using Gtalk and MSN accounts if that matters.

    Yes this is not a problem on Ubuntu Breezy. Just Dapper 6.06 and was fixed for a while in the betas, but a week or so before final stopped working again.
