What does the mail log say?

I forgot where it is on Ubuntu, my guess would be /var/log/mail/maillog , I'm using FreeBSD for my server now.

    Yep it sounds like it.

Try the following in the grub shell:

    cat /boot/grub/device.map

    For me the result is:

    (hd0) /dev/sda
    (hd1) /dev/sdb

[SOLVED] Re: which apach2 config files to backup?

I would backup the /etc/apache2 directory
it holds your conf, enabled mods, enabled sites.

If you run PHP also backup your /etc/php5 directory.
