    Re: Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 1 tomorrow

    Hasn't been released yet.

    Check here should have thread when it happens:

    Also mailing list usually announces it(official), but I can't find...

    Re: Advice for building a PC

    I'd like to point out that I like my antec 300 case. Currently 7 fans running to keep cool. Top 140mm fan keeps modem/router cool as well (have them sitting on top of case).

    Re: I'm torn! Goin' through grief! Help me fig it out?

    To get 3x2tb drives now would be expensive.
    To spend $1500 on a desktop you really should get at least a $200 120gb SSD (sata6.0gbps). It would be 3x as fast as a HDD. Put OS/apps on it. Use HDD as...

    Re: Do SSD's still need tweaking?

    You can still use swap partition, when installed just set swappiness preference to 1 so it rarely uses swap. I have no idea how removing swap affects sleep/hibernate on laptops.

    Re: Do SSD's still need tweaking?

    Yes it is necessary.

    If your SSD is not aligned properly, then your write speed will be much slower and it will also wear out the SSD much faster.

    TRIM keeps the SSD write speed at 90+%....

    Re: Do SSD's still need tweaking?

    Last I checked:
    You do need to edit fstab to make it do TRIM (kernel is capable of trim, but for whatever reason developers don't seem to be able to or bother detecting SSD and auto enable trim).

    Re: Attach your boot-chart!

    Impressive that the HDD was able to reach high of 204mb/s and looks like sustained speed of ~150mb/s
  8. Re: maps.ubuntu.com shows ubuntu servers around the world

    If you zoom into map, it shows a lot more locations. And NS (Dartmouth) is included.

    I think original(not zoomed) map just shows one icon per country.

    Re: ssd for atom netbook

    I have an atom n270 nettop. Swapped out the 160gb hdd for 60gb vertex1 (but put hdd back in when I needed ssd for my main desktop). It did help speed things up, but the processor/chipset definitely...

    Re: AMD or Intel processors for laptops

    Partly correct. Fusion covers a wide range of processors. From single core netbook cpu to quad core laptop cpu, to quad core desktop cpu.

    Re: AMD or Intel processors for laptops

    If talking about fanless, I'd still suggest a fan if there is room. You can buy silent fans. Unless you are specifically talking about cpu fans. I dunno, I'd probably want some air blowing.

    I...

    Re: System->Admin->Disk Utility->Benchmark results

    Thanks for the write benchmark (note to others do not do it unless formatting!).

    As long as the randoms are good a low write speed shouldn't be too bad unless for some reason you are always...

    Re: System->Admin->Disk Utility->Benchmark results

    That's nice. I'm really interested in e-350 netbook (if >=15.6" I'd want better processor, the new AMD 1.4ghz quad core). I'd want small screen no optical drive so it would be lighter (I have high...

    Re: System->Admin->Disk Utility->Benchmark results

    EDIT: misread post
    So you got a SATAII SSD and your laptop should be capable of SATAIII? SATAII SSD should be fast enough.

    Re: System->Admin->Disk Utility->Benchmark results

    They are the access time which is shown on right side of graph, and bottom right of benchmark.

    Thanks for the info! Yes 125mb/s is SATAI limitation.
    I wonder if the new AMD c-50 and e-350...

    Re: System->Admin->Disk Utility->Benchmark results

    Yes it represents access time (see bottom right of benchmarks). With SSD the access time is MUCH smaller and more flat. One of many reasons SSD are much faster than hdd.

    Re: System->Admin->Disk Utility->Benchmark results

    I havn't seen a HDD do that before. Could be something wrong, or maybe something in background was running causing read speeds to be sporadic.

    Maybe run test a couple times over a couple days and...

    Re: Buying a netbook

    If you can get e-350 amd netbook that would be best.

    Make sure whatever you get has HDMI. (USB3+sata6.0 would be nice)

    Also make sure you have access to HDD and RAM in case you want to upgrade....

    Re: Rage quit thread

    Unless like on my nettop it says "program is not responding, shutdown anyway?" which happens about 1 every 10 times.

    Does new ubuntu still have pointless "are you sure you want to shutdown?" prompt when you want to shutdown etc?

    Or do I still have to go into obscure gnome settings or type command into terminal...
