Agreed. I run Gnome on my Dell Mini 9 as well, after being a netbook interface fan for a couple years. Unity wasn't for me, though.

Be sure to burn the iso as an image, not a data disc, and also set the PC to boot from the cd in the BIOS.

Nope, sudo compiz --check throws a fallback to default window manager message in a root terminal.
That doesn't appear to be a valid command. When i just run "compiz", th window manager freaks out, and I use the Fuzion Icon to reload the WM and get compiz running again.
I've got that *exact* Dell system, running 10.10 x64 as well. However, I installed the restricted drivers and Compiz works flawlessly with the ATI driver.
Try installing Compiz Fusion Icon as...
