Thanks to everyone's suggestions so far.
I guess I am puzzled as to why all recovery software fails to even detect the drive. It seems like I should be able to make a dd dump of the drive even if...
I can format the drive in "Disk Utility" but I don't want to- I want to save the files that are still on there using something like testdisk or ddrescue... but for whatever reason they refuse to work...
I have used testdisk successfully in the past- in this case though, just like ddrescue and gparted, testdisk simply doesn't "see" the drive.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what is possible for recovery?

Here's the highlights:
I've been having this trouble too-
It had been working for me and then libimobiledevice failed to update.
I took these steps:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pmcenery/ppa
sudo apt-get update...
Sorry for your troubles.
What method did you use to install 11.04 to the pendrive?

And another aptitude based removal command, probably to try and run first is:
sudo aptitude remove kubuntu-desktop
I have not been in your situation, but here's a link that describes what to do get back to a pure gnome ubuntu from kubuntu:

I can't translate the gid message for you. I'd like to hear that one myself.
Here's someone else who had that problem points to this thread as their solution:...

and came across this older thread...

I've been lucky to only...
my PATH looks about the same as yours, with more ad-hoc add-in paths at the end.
My conflict was with the ipkg-cl & update-alternatives there in the /usr/local/bin

So, just one last thing before I mark this solved:
How do I fix my path problem noted in post number 20?
Thanks,
