  1. [all variants] Re: [non-pae] Anybody with an old ThinkPad who wants to do a small experiment?

I have built a .deb package that will install an upstart job to enable this at boot time so the user does not need to start the script every time before a new kernel upgrade is to be installed....

[lubuntu] Re: Broken packages after upgrading to Lubuntu 12.10

this is good to hear :-)

please also see this other thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=12498964
this is where this script came from. I am planning to convert this into a .deb...
  3. [all variants] Re: [non-pae] Anybody with an old ThinkPad who wants to do a small experiment?

Yes, it seems I was wrong assuming they would show 36 bits even *before* the pae kernel is installed. It seems it will always show 32 bit if it is a non-pae kernel. I should remove this 32 bit...
  4. [all variants] Re: [non-pae] Anybody with an old ThinkPad who wants to do a small experiment?

I have improved the script a little bit, now it will put the pae flag into the flags line to the other flags, check that it isn't run a second time or on CPUs that already have the pae flag and...
  5. [all variants] Re: [non-pae] Anybody with an old ThinkPad who wants to do a small experiment?

    cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep sizes
address sizes : 36 bits physical, 32 bits virtual

It seems these Pentium-M do indeed have PAE built in and just do not announce it in their flags, otherwise there...
  6. [all variants] Re: [non-pae] Anybody with an old ThinkPad who wants to do a small experiment?

    You can try to install

    sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-quantal

this will pull in a bunch of other linux-* meta packages and linux-* packages from the 3.5 kernel (better save the list of...
  7. [all variants] Re: [non-pae] Anybody with an old ThinkPad who wants to do a small experiment?

if there is no pae flag in your /proc/cpuinfo then the deb package for the new kernel images (Quantal and later) will simply refuse to install (and leave the entire package system in en inconsistent...
  8. [all variants] Making Buntu >= 12.10 work on a Pentium M-CPU without PAE.

For example a ThinkPad t40 or other models from that era with this Pentium-M CPU?

ONLY if you can afford to make it unbootable (and know how to restore it back to a working Precise) please tell me...

[lubuntu] Re: Broken packages after upgrading to Lubuntu 12.10

[SOLVED] Re: xubuntu: where are the default mount options?

No, theoretically it might work. My theory is that udisks-glue is a little bit faster than thunar (which has to go through all this GIO/gvfs stuff) and so the unintended (but positive) side effect...

[SOLVED] Re: xubuntu: where are the default mount options?

Its probably a race condition, udisks-glue will get its events directly from udisks and will initiate the mount directly through udisks while in xfce there is GIO on top of udisks and also it first...

[SOLVED] Re: xubuntu: where are the default mount options?

In the options on the advanced tab there is a link to the volume manager settings, there on the "storage" tab you can uncheck the box "mount drives when hot-plugged". Then it will not mount them...

[SOLVED] Re: xubuntu: where are the default mount options?

An alternative would be on the"Storage" tab in thunar-volman:

    instead of:

[X] mount removable drives when hot-plugged

this could be changed into something like:

    when a removable drive is...

[SOLVED] Re: xubuntu: where are the default mount options?

I just had a quick look into the source code of thunar-volman and it is calling g_volume_mount() when it detects the event. So it is indeed thunar-volman who is actually mounting it (of course it...

[SOLVED] Re: xubuntu: where are the default mount options?

Ok, after a lot of googling and experimenting I think I have found a working solution:

    disable auto mounting in thunar...

[SOLVED] Re: xubuntu: where are the default mount options?

I have tried this and while usbmont works on its own as advertised it unfortunately seems to be totally incompatible with xfce:

[SOLVED] xubuntu: where are the default mount options?

  19. [xubuntu] Re: Thunar thumbnails on USB drive painfully slow, not using embedded exif thumbnails

Thank you for that link, I did not know that there is a ppa for the new version specifically for 12.04 (I didn't even search for it because I did not expect it to exist)

    I have installed it and...
  20. [xubuntu] Thunar thumbnails on USB drive painfully slow, not using embedded exif thumbnails

I have seen some references that tumblerd which thunar is apparently using can create thumbnails from embedded exif thumbnails in jpeg files. However, this does not seem to work for me, it seems it...
