I am unable to install Skype with 14.04.
I have tried 2 versions of skype.
It appears to install but just doesn't in the software centre.

With all the updates it will be the same as the final release. It is likely that it already has those updates and is the final version.
That is not so. A beta with all its updatres is the same as the final release.
It will be a very very slowwwwwwww download tomorrow as the servers will be very busy.

Have you tried Flash_Aid? It is a Firefox plugin.
You could also try installing GParted from the repositories. You will still need to unmount the drive.

I found it under View/Tools but now I can't reproduce that. I did see that Ctl F7 was the keyboard shortcut.
