akavinski, it worked for me when I changed kernel version from 2.6.28-15 to 2.6.28-11. Rescue mode didn't work too. This option appears in grub menu. Hope it works.

Try this: in Firefox, when the proxy asks for username and password, it displays the proxy's IP and port. Use them to configure Synaptic.
It worked for me.
