Who is the owner of the troubled drive? If owner i root it'll be mounted read-only for any other regular user, you might need to chmod the drive

You'll be better off with dedicated graphics and not some onboard solution, GIMP takes a lot of RAM, and the more RAM and dedicated graphics you've got the better.

I don't think it's a virus I think it's caused by a dodgy repo try removing the repo
To upgrade to 64 bit you need a clean install with a 64 bit iso
