    About gdm I can say that I just tried to install a new theme and download it from ubuntu-look in a *.tar.gz format and it worked perfectly.

    How do you install it?

    I didnt follow what you were talking about but if you want to untar that and place it in /usr/src then just do:

    tar -xvjf linux-xxxx

    and then

    mv the_directory_created_when_untar /usr/src
    ...

    try to do this:

    cd /boot
    mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd.img-kernel_version kernel_version

    for example,if you are compiling 2.6.8 then would be something like:
    mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.8...
