  1. Re: How to install Ubuntu 14.04 in software RAID 1 with Intel Z87 chipset mobo contro

No, GC does not do what TRIM does.

In order for an SSD to do on its own what TRIM does, it would have to know about every different filesystem type, RAID implementation, (logical) volume manager...
  2. Re: How to install Ubuntu 14.04 in software RAID 1 with Intel Z87 chipset mobo contro

The problem with that, and the reason I didn't finally give up on software RAID and go with a RAID card, is no TRIM support.

No TRIM support is a problem. SSDs internally shuffle used blocks...
  3. [SOLVED] Re: Dual Boot+FakeRAID+MBR & GPT Partitions on the same Array? Is this doable?

I gave up on mdadm & FakeRAID. Spent about a week trying to get it going. Tried Ubuntu, Mint and CentOS. Tried every trick in the book, and even invented some new ones. Even when I could get...

    [ubuntu] Latest Released Kernel?

    Hi All,

How can I easily find out what is the current latest stable kernel version for a particular release? (IOW: What I'd be running if I was up-to-date?)

    Thanks,

    [ubuntu] Re: Broken rsyslog Update?

Thanks for the pointer, Toz. That allowed the upgrade to succeed, but I'm still missing most of my logging. In fact: The only logging I'm getting is Apache. Nothing new in syslog. Nothing new in...

    [ubuntu] Re: Broken rsyslog Update?

I don't think that's going to address the problem.

I think it's hanging because rsyslog no longer starts/stops properly. For example:

    ./rsyslog start
    Rather than invoking init scripts...

    [ubuntu] Re: Broken rsyslog Update?

Have tried removing the rsyslog package so I can reinstall it. Can't, because it also wants to remove ubuntu-minimal. Have tried --reinstall. No go: Hangs the same way.

    Re: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS & Unity: Ubuntu's "Win8?"

Not true. I did not try Cinnamon. In researching Gnome 2 forks and Xfce, I evaluated all that I read and came to the conclusion that Mate would most likely give me what I wanted. So I first tried...

    Re: For LTS users.

I thought it might, but it seems to me I've more often seen people complaining of problems with 64-bit environments than 32-bit ones, so I took the easy way out :p

    Re: For LTS users.

I tried that. It was Not Good, IME. Mate on Mint 13 was much nicer.

I did the 32-bit version because, when I asked over on the Mint forums, a respondent suggested it was six of one, half-dozen...

    Re: For LTS users.

I've been messing with Mint 13 Mate, 32-bit, with the 686-pae kernel, for... I dunno... 3-4 hours--on and off. Haven't found anything to dislike, so far.

Just signed-up over at their forums and starting research now. Was thinking Mate, as I'm not looking for a new desktop experience at this time.

    Re: Why must LTS die?

    Bingo.

Well, as long as practicable, anyway. At least for many. One quick stat I just looked up indicates XP still had 39% of the market share as of Feb. 2013. Win7 has 44%.

    Ubuntu 12.04 LTS & Unity: Ubuntu's "Win8?"

Got a "new"ish Dell machine. Decided to put 12.04 LTS on it. Figured if I disliked Unity as much as I was led to believe I would, I could always switch to XFCE or Mate.

I gave it the old college...
