Ive just bought a 3rd monitor and Im hoping to set it up with my other 2 in a triple head configuration. The setup looks like this:
22" (1680x1050) + 26" (1920x1200) + 22" (1680x1050)...

I assume you have been on IRC #ubuntu-motu ? the motu's hang out there and it is the best place to be asking for this sort of advice! Definately log on there and have a chat to the Motu's there.
Try using the alternate edubuntu cd (I didnt know there was a live edubuntu cd) I just installed it last week on my brothers pc, works perfectly.

Are you using ubuntuforums.com or .org? I have had troubles with .com before, so you could try .org
Did you check your spam folder for the confirm emails? sometimes they get misdirected...
Definately gnome. kde feels windows-ish to me. I like the balance of speed and usability in gnome.
