Oohh, burn! That was a little harsh. :P
But getting back to the facts, with the same Linksys router and the WinXP server having a static IP with the rest on DHCP, and everything working great...
And while we're at it, I reverted the smb.conf file to the original commented out line with the preceding semicolon --
; name resolve order = lmhosts host wins bcast
Now the system seems to...
Still doesn't explain why with the earlier version of libsmbclient it works perfectly!!!!!!
I don't quite understand that. This is within my personal WLAN and should never make it outside of my router???
Unfortunately not for me, and I have duplicated this many times. Whenever I don't pin libsmbclient to the 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.8 version the fusesmb fails. When go back to the earlier version it works...
Fair enough, but so much else of xubuntu works beautifully. It surprises me that this core component does not work at all. I wish I were better at coding or had the time to fo this. I would...
I think it is a bit ridiculous that we are all gathering in this forum about something so core to an operating system that it is approaching shameful that it is not there. No operating system should...
Hi all,
After an awful odyssey through two attempts to get Jaunty (Junky?) working, I finally gave up, did a fresh install of Hardy and then upgraded to Intrepid. Everything went fine, but there...
Out of curiosity, why do want to do this?
cgkx,
Thank you for your quick and thoughtful reply. Unfortunately, the networking problem with 9.04 was the least of my troubles. A myriad other problems (no recognition of mouse, ACPI failure,...
Right now I'm doing a total fresh install of Jaunty, hoping it might work where the "upgrade" didn't, so I can't test this. Will Gigolo allow browsing so that I can see all the shared folders on the...
OK, Many Thanks to foxy123!!
This is a bug in the samba library for 8.10, and I have solved it as suggested by regressing to libsmbclient from 8.04 Hardy. This is done by adding the Hardy...

How were you able to do that downgrade?
The Hardy-update repository is no longer available on canonical.com or doesn't seem to "take."
I used the mirror site

How have you set up your samba.conf file, and can your Ubuntu machine see your windows shares?
I have had the same problem except that Samba seems installed. My win boxes can see the Xubuntu server, but the Xubuntu box can't see the Win shares.
where are you writing that smb command? When I write it in the firefox box, it will not work at all. Running Xubuntu 8.10 and firefox 3.03 for linux.
How are you manually connecting? When I try that smb://192.168.0.x I get an error message saying that FF doesn't have an app to handle the smb call.
In my case the 8.10 was an "upgrade," from 8.04 LT, and SMB is definitely broken. I'm considering uninstalling samba and trying to do a clean reinstall. Has anyone tried that?
Same problem here. Have tinkered with smb.conf to no avail. "Upgrade" to 8.10 was a mistake for the networking bit. REALLY disappointing. I haven't tried gnome commander. I'm running Xubuntu...
The entire Samba setup is so kludgy it's unbelievable! Here are just a few of the problems I've encountered (other than the incredible saga of getting the thing installed and working in the first...
Only problem is that if you are using a wireless network, it takes time to connect, and the autostart script tries to run to fuse the netmount in samba before the wireless net is connected and fails....
Forger:
You solved the problem with the clean suggestions of using Terminal to configure java and reinstall the packages!!! Now up and working in FF3 Hardy 8.04.
Thanks so much:)
Or should I use VectorLinux???
