    OK, turns out I was able to fix this problem. I reformatted the card from the disk utility on Ubuntu. I am now able to transfer files back to the camera. But it turns out you cannot rename the files....

    Yes it can. You need to have a googletalk account. Easy. But in my experience with Lucid Skype works much better. So, you should both get Skype. Works remarkably well.

    OK, I found the kernels in /boot. I gksudo nautilus, and deleted them. I then ran update-grub, and that did it. Don't know what those were doing there, but there you have it.
