What does happen if you try and shutdown with cifs still mounted? If it's something bad, then this is a bug, and bugs should be fixed.

dim4ik, You can't use a .config from an older kernel straight off as it will omit newer options introduced to the kernel. Run "make oldconfig" after you've copied it, and you'll be prompted only...

Should you be compiling as root? You don't need the superuser until install. With the source in /usr/src/linux-X you can run make unpriveleged to output to your /home
