you can install vmware player install xp and boot xp whenever you like and use your almost any windows software while on ubuntu.
You save my day. My teacher asked me to find scientific software for linux, cause all the computers in our school are on Edubuntu.

Also you can lower the font size in system > preferences > appearance, to make things smaller.
Besides wine you can use vmware and create your own virtual machine in ubuntu and install any windows os and run any exe file.
My suggestion for servers is: Centos, Rhel, Debian.
