Re: microsofts lawsuit aginst open source

Right. Except that they don't care about users like you or me. They care about Fortune 500.

And they're not going to sue per se, they'll just go ... "hey, I see you're using Linux, it infringes...
  5. Re: I'm going to try to learn how to program. Which language do you recommend and why

Try coding with a Finnish keyboard layout for a while and you'll understand :p

There's nothing wrong with them, but I'd rather do without. Not like I love them. And well, they're really easy to...
  6. Re: I'm going to try to learn how to program. Which language do you recommend and why

Well, you won't do pointer arithmetic (for example) in python. But I can't imagine you'd want to, either ...
  7. Re: I'm going to try to learn how to program. Which language do you recommend and why

It is way harder. But as some others have said, it will probably pay off. I'd still recommend python though.

Again, once you have learned one language properly, learning new languages is fairly...
  8. Re: I'm going to try to learn how to program. Which language do you recommend and why

The speed difference between interpreted and compiled languages is really insignificant. Unless you're coding an FPS game or something like photoshop, it really doesn't matter.

    You know the one...
  9. Re: I'm going to try to learn how to program. Which language do you recommend and why

I personally wouldn't recommend C++ for a beginner, but I can see why some people do. I think that's a bit of a "tough love" approach: it forces you to learn all the low level stuff (like pointers),...
  10. Re: I'm going to try to learn how to program. Which language do you recommend and why

    Python.

Why? The syntax is simple enough. When you're beginning to learn programming, you don't want to waste time on learning obscure semicolon placement rules, you'd rather focus on the problem...

Poll: Re: Ubuntu on Dell. Who will be buying one?

The inspiron one with ubuntu is cheaper than with Vista Home Premium, but a bit more expensive than Home Basic.

I forget the other models. I think they were both cheaper than with vista, but I'm...

Poll: Re: Ubuntu not for beginners

And I thought the point was that not everyone is an experienced user.

Besides, it's not like you have to read the doc anyway, but if you think you need it it'd be nice if it was easily available....

  16. Re: when will all software be portable??

Isn't DSL already like that? I heard you can just start it on windows from a USB stick. I might be wrong though.
  17. Re: Do you roll your own kernel? Nutshell-book free online.

That's a really good book. I've read most of it ... and have had the latest kernel sources lying around for a while but haven't gotten around to compile yet.

I will. And I'll do it before the next...

Poll: Re: Not a WinXP replacement yet?

it's not that people have XP habits, it's whether they realize that they're complete newbies with linux and have a lot to learn. And, just as importantly, unlearn.

    The problem comes when people...

Poll: Re: Not a WinXP replacement yet?

  25. Re: Dell's Moving on Linux - 100,000 Customer Requests

Technically, their agreement with MS does not prevent this. As far as I know, OEMs have a "the more you sell the cheaper you buy" type of licensing with MS, so if they start selling Linux boxes (or...
