    The numerical convention (e.g. "1>0") works for me in Grub 2.0 on my Precise desktop. Even so, I would recommend using the title method as it is IMO less prone to user-error during setup and updates.

    As far as the trouble you are having booting from the CD, it may be a video driver issue. There are options you can invoke as the CD boots which can help if that is the problem.

    We need to know if the OS is getting past the bootloader. If it uses Grub2 (Ubuntu family), hold down the shift key during boot and see if the menu appears....
