    Removed Vista on a new Asus m50 laptop, put on Ubuntu and I've got no sound.

    Went through the comprehensive sound guide a few times, everything point towards the alsa mixer - which is what I think...

    gnome on older computers - but once you have a fast enough computer, they both seem to perform equally. i've tried both on my 2ghz duel processor, and they both seem to run just as fast.
