    Hey folks,

Ever since I upgraded my home server to 12.04 LTS, samba seems to have been broken. I can't view any of the shares from any of my windows 7 boxes in the house. Not sure what the issue...

Re: HOWTO: Setup Samba peer-to-peer with Windows

    Try running

    sudo /etc/init.d/smbd restart

Looks like samba moved to smbd... (On my 10.04 server at least)... weird.

    Hey guys,

Well I am rebuilding my home file server, and I was wondering what FS is the best for my purpose? I will be using 1x250GB SATA system drive, and several 1.5TB drives in RAID for storage....

  5. Failed deleted partitions during a linux install. Help!

    Hey guys,

So I'm kind of upset right now. I was attempting to set up Arch Linux today on a netbook of my brothers. I was planning to dual-boot it with windows. All was going well, and I was going...

    Re: Install IE under wine

Wow massive resurrection of this thread.
I was not being rude, I was simply asking why he needed IE. And Open Source CAN replace Windows 100%, if you are not a gamer. I am not by any means...

    [ubuntu] Bad Blocks and RAID.

    Hey guys,

I am setting up a server at my house with 4x1tb in RAID6, with the possibility of expanding in the future. (Ubuntu software RAID with mdadm).

I know that sometimes RAID rebuilds can...

    [ubuntu] Re: Hot-swap?

I would probably write a script to unmount all file systems, then use hdparm to stop the drive. Then I could just pull it out. The problem arises when trying to re-register the drive. Not sure how to...

Regardless of chip-set? I thought you needed the correct chip-set for it to work.

    [ubuntu] Hot-swap?

Hey guys. Well, I was just wondering if Ubuntu supported hot-swap of SATA II devices natively. I have an ICH7 chip set. Will it work automatically or do I need a script/program to detect a new drive?...

[ubuntu] Re: Installing Jaunty w/ extra partition

Oh okay, I'm sorry. I didn't realize you were talking about a laptop enclosure. When you said enclosure, I figured you were talking about a HDD in a USB/FireWire/eSATA enclosure:popcorn:
    Ubuntu's...
  14. [ubuntu] Re: attempting to install ethernet controller driver...

Okay good, we have the driver installed, now to get it to be included in the kernel. For some reason that e1000.7.gz didnt work for me either. I ignored it, and I was fine. It's basically just a man...
  15. [ubuntu] Re: attempting to install ethernet controller driver...

Yeah the second one depends on the first one. I had to scratch my head for a few minutes figuring out the deps, then I remembered you needed the generic before the server.

    [kubuntu] Re: Hard Drive Switch

You should be okay. If you did something like that with windows, you would run into all sorts of driver errors. Thats the great thing about ubuntu: one size fits all. All the drivers are included, so...
  17. [ubuntu] Re: attempting to install ethernet controller driver...

Alright well I found an alternative. You need two files: http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux-source-2.6.15/linux-headers-2.6.15-54_2.6.15-54.76_i386.deb and this one: ...
  18. [ubuntu] Re: attempting to install ethernet controller driver...

Sorry to double post, but do you have another working ubuntu box with cd-rw drive lying around? AptOnCd would help get the headers on there.
  19. [ubuntu] Re: attempting to install ethernet controller driver...

Okay well we can fix that. Sorry, i totally forgot you don't have internet access. :o Post output of

    uname -r

Linux headers exist in tar.gz's also. Ill see if i can find one.
  20. [ubuntu] Re: attempting to install ethernet controller driver...

Alright well I'm home now :p And I think I have a solution to your problem. You will NOT need to recompile your kernel. If you open the Makefile in the src directory of the driver, and scroll down to...
  21. [ubuntu] Re: attempting to install ethernet controller driver...

I edited my post above too. :p I believe you willl have to recompile your kernel. I'll be back in about half an hour whilst I walk home from school.
  22. [ubuntu] Re: attempting to install ethernet controller driver...

Plug and play is not supported? What's your kernel version?
EDIT: Looks like you will have to compile the driver into your kernel. I'm at school right now, and your text file is blocked by my...

[ubuntu] Re: Can't see windows computer from Ubuntu-Samba

I know this is a stupid question, but is the windows running any shares? I think that if there are no shared folders, then Ubuntu throws up that error.

[ubuntu] Re: Installing Jaunty w/ extra partition

I'm not quite sure what you are asking. Are you making the 40gb into an external storage drive, or a bootable drive? If you are planning on installing Ubuntu on an internal drive, and use the 40gb...
