    I think many of us have experienced this issue. It happens on about 20% of boots. I just restart the system (turn off then on) and usually it's okay. A bit frustrating, but not too terrible.

    Umm... That's not quite what I meant. The command above (sudo apt-get install startupmanager) is to install Startup Manager. Then you run it by going to System >> Administration >> Startup Manager.

    For anyone still trying to get gfxboot working, I would recommend trying out startupmanager instead. You can use any image as a grub background.

    I would say boot up an Ubuntu or Knoppix Live CD and mount your boot or root partitiion (whichever one has menu.lst). Then you can edit to your hearts content.
