I have a patched version of cGmail in my PPA but I recommend gm-notify, it seems to be more stable and lighter on resources.
I'm also working on a gm-notify package which I'm talking to the author...
I think you should only put it up each time you change the prefs myself.
Is this message only going to come up the first time the prefs are applied or will it be persistent?
