A good start could be to launch the application from the command line, and copy / paste what happens in the Terminal when the app lauches and crashes.
I use iTapVNC (and iTapRDP for work as well). It connects to all my Ubuntu 11.04 boxes flawlessly. It's a paid app but totaly worth it IMHO.

How did you install Google Chrome, and what version of Ubuntu are you using ?

Basically for a new user, I'd say Ubuntu has everything you need out of the box.
The only package you might want is ubuntu-restricted-extras, to have mp3, DivX, flash support (among other things)....

Are you talking of actual voice calls? If so, as far as I know, it isn't present yet in Pidgin.
You can try emesene to achieve that over MSN protocol.

+1, try removing the damn libmoon (Silverlight) libraries using Synaptic, it does provoque segmentation faults in Firefox.

Try to search for that libmoon package in Synaptic (it's a Silverlight plugin) and remove it completely.
Did you try to completely remove and purge Firefox through Aptitude ?
Try to move your Firefox profile elsewhere (it in the hidden .mozilla directory of your Home folder), to create a new profile then you'll manually import bookmarks or history form the old one.
Do you have any plugin/extension installed for your Firefox? Did you try disabling them?
If you want to transfer files over SSH, you can do this with the built-in nautilus client "Connect to a server..."
If you're looking for a connection manager like Putty, then you can try secpanel...
