yea, this was just what I needed. thanks a bunch.
That's very interesting, and certainly worth a try. One problem I can see with this is that it forces a top panel on the user, which I personally dislike.
I thought of setting a keyboard shortcut...
Alright, to do what I did here's what you do.
assuming you've still got the files in your /var/cache/apt-build/build/ -folder try doing
tar -xzvf...
ok, well I found out what my problem was. The gnome-panel-* folder I had to use was packed in a .tar.gz file called gnome-panel_2.30.2.orig.tar.gz. After unpacking and using that the installation...

Thank you!
While I agree with your main point I personally find that a text-based interface is simply another way of creating "lazy users". Real linux-users simply manipulate the transistors...

I don't understand - for some reason it doesn't work for me. I dual boot xp, and there's no problem there so the keyboard must be fine.
here's what I do to copy what you did - I hope it makes...

final bump...

Since 9.10, I lost all alt gr functionality, and I'm getting tired of copy-pasting symbols. I'm running a Dell Inspiron 6400 notebook. This is my xorg.conf:
