Out of the box? VectorLinux. Though I would also suggest both Ubuntu Minimal + Xfce and Arch + Xfce. Consider going BSD with NetBSD + Xfce. And JWM really is nifty and fast once properly configured...
Opera 10.00.4268 feels faster than Firefox 3.1b2 PGO overall, though it seems 3.1b2 PGO renders pages faster.
