The P9600 includes "virtualization technology." I suspect VMWare is very confused. Can you reinstall it?
99% of the time no audio means the sound is muted somewhere along the line. What application are you using? Have you run Sound Settings? Have you plugged the speakers/earphones (which?) into the back...
Also, what application or applications are you printing from? For example, I find printing some PDFs gruesomely slow. From gedit, instant printing.
In what you described, there is no operating system anywhere. How did you boot to "scan hard drives..."
Also, Saucy is a work in development. If you plan to help with the testing, great, otherwise...
Drivers work very differently in Linux than what you are used to. Most drivers are included with the kernel, so it "just works." If you have installed Linux and it runs, you have no need to chase...

Is a program called "Sound Settings" available in Gnome? Does it have an Input tab? Does anything appear there?

When I built this computer, I selected "best of breed" components. I doubt if I saved any money, but the system is still working very nicely.
If you avoid the very latest...
Ubuntu 10.04 desktop has expired, it is no longer supported.
If everything was fine for three weeks, and now it's not, there is probably a hardware problem.
How about lspci optput?
You're playing with really old, not supported versions of Linux. Try Ubuntu 12.04 or Mint 13.
Just run lspci and post the output, it should be less than 20 lines.
How did you get Ubuntu installed, with no CD and no USB ports?
With all due respect, living in a small town seriously limits your job/career prospects. When I got out of school, I moved 60 miles and got what turned out to be the job of my dreams.
If you look...
