Just found the answer I was looking for, had to run:
sudo gtk-update-icon-cache -f /usr/share/icons/hicolor/
This fixed the problem, it seems to work great now!

I've followed all the steps but after rebooting I keep getting the error "The NetworkManager applet could not find some required resources. It cannot contine". On the bright side at least the wifi...
