I think I got a better way of resolving this problem.
Login with GNOME Ubuntu Desktop (3rd or 4th option) when you boot.
Go to your Home folder.
Delete 'gnome2' and 'gnome-private' folders....
I also have this issue. Not sure why.
I even reinstalled to see if I messed up anything.
Anyone knows why...???

sudo apt-get install gnome-panel
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop.

I will say since you have a separate /home partition, so you don't have to worry about anything.
When you reach the partition screen, do the following:
Select the partition you want to load...
You can do that without AWN because AWN is only a dock.
But you lose any shortcut on desktop. That;s why AWN...
Without AWN you will have different wallpapers on different workspaces but will lose...

By trying Ubuntu I mean, don't use Wubi to install it on your system within Windows.
Step to follow to try with Live CD:
Insert LiveCD when booted with Windows.
Restart your PC with Live...
