Tried installing that driver, doesn't give any errors but it doesn't work either.

Just to let people know, it's often not necessary to reinstall the OS to get SCIM working in Anki. Found this article with explanation:

Gnome panel failing to start if scim installed
I'm running the 10.04 beta and everything works fine apart from gnome panel, which simply fails to start if scim is installed and set to run at start-up. I've confirmed it's scim by uninstalling etc....
