The easy route:
1. bring up a terminal and type: apt-get install lxrandr
2. to run type: lxrandr
You get a nice GUI and can choose the monitors resolution. To exit close the terminal.

Run Ubuntu from the CD. Check the HD is showing up. Check to see if any files were installed.

It may be a hardware issue. Try running from the CD. If it boots up fine try the install from the Desktop.
OK. Then start reading:
Sounds like a bug. Revert back to the old kernel and try again in a week:)
Try bypassing router and connect directly to modem. see what happens.
You may need to boot to the live CD and recover files from your original OS and reformat.
