Maybe it's because I've used Gnome before Ubuntu but...it's hard for me to notice a difference. I see certain dialogs, new defaults, and extra buttons sometimes but nothing drastic.

If you are using the fglrx drivers you would use XGL. That's what I do and it works fine. ]

You have to enable png/svg under image formats.

I got these same errors you had because I copied/pasted the repo url from the website. You have to make sure to change it to edgy/main.

The whole point of the HOWTO is to *not* use a CD.
