Not sure what version of gnome you are intending to install Classic Gnome (Gnome 2) or Gnome 3? I'm using xubuntu, crunchbang, and archlinux these days.
Have you tried just plugging the device in and seeing what happens?

Yes vmware or virtualbox work just fine. How have you got the virtual machine setup? Number of cores, ram, etc...

I'm running Lubuntu 11.04 on my netbook and it's all good. Everything works out of the box.

I don't really have a problem with unity, and there is still a long way to go until the next LTS. I guess I subscribe to the horses for courses idea, so I would use it for some thing and not others....
