Sync to vblank is not just linuk thing. It's everywhere, from tv signals to video games. And I know what is it used for in some cases but not sure about this one.

leaving ff4 running with dtamanager downloading something freezes my notebook after some 20-30 minutes.

that's pretty much what I concluded also. Everything actually still runs normally but I'm stuck with one screen and moving cursor which cannot make any input.
