I have 2 VMs. Windows XP and ubuntu server 12.04. I have openssh-server installed and tried to use putty to access the server, but it didn't register for some reason.

I was at a friend's house last night and my VMs had the IP address of 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.2.1 (or something similar), what causes them and how do you fix the issue?

No, my goal is to be able to leave my laptop at home, but access from anywhere as long as I have Internet access.

I cannot, for the life of me, remotely access my laptop. No matter what settings or how many times I mess with said settings, I can't get it to allow me to remotely access my laptop. Any advice?
